How To Install a Raised Bed Kitchen Garden in South Carolina (Real 2-Bed Project with Irrigation)

Most beginner gardeners don’t fail because they can’t grow food. They struggle because they don’t have a plan.

In this project, we helped a Chapin, South Carolina homeowner transform a sloped backyard space into a functional, beautiful kitchen garden using two raised beds and a simple, thoughtful design.

Here’s exactly how we did it, from planning to planting!

The Starting Point: A Beautiful Yard…With a Challenge

Our client wanted a kitchen garden that felt like a natural extension of her backyard – not something that looked added on or out of place. She already had a cozy patio with a stone fireplace and she wanted to make sure that her new kitchen garden space tied in seamlessly with her existing aesthetic.

She had a great space with plenty of sunlight, but there was one major issue:

The area was sloped.

That meant we couldn’t just drop in raised beds and start planting. If we did, water runoff and uneven ground would create long term problems.

Step 1: Solving the Slope (Before Anything Else)

Before we could even think about the garden itself, we had to fix the foundation. This step is often overlooked, but it’s critical. A garden is only as successful as the ground it sits on.

We built a small retaining wall to:

  • Level the garden space
  • Prevent erosion
  • Create a clean, structured area for the beds

Keeping with the homeowner’s wish to match her current design, the retaining wall was finished with stone veneer to match that on the existing fireplace.

The retaining wall was filled with dirt and leveled and then treated with a simple mixture of 30% landscape vinegar and water to kill any existing grass or weed. A layer of Ram Board was placed and secured to act as a further grass and weed deterrent.

Step 2: Designing a Simple, Functional Layout

We kept the design intentionally simple and manageable:

  • Two 4x8x2 raised cedar garden beds
  • 3′ space between the two beds for easy access
  • Pebble rock and pavers for the walkways
  • Two arch trellises for vertical growing

This setup is ideal for beginners because it:

  • Creates a clean, organized look
  • Keeps maintenance manageable
  • Produces a surprising amount of food!

Step 3: Choosing the Right Materials

We used raised cedar beds for durability and a natural look that blends into the landscape. While cedar is often considered to be “rot resistant”, we used Eco Treatment as a wood preservative and to provide a beautiful, aged look.

The addition of arch trellises allowed us to maximize growing space, support vining crops like cucumbers, squash and tomatoes, and add visual interest and structure to the garden.

The homeowner selected a 24″x16″ paver that matched her existing stone and the remaining space was filled with a multi-colored mix of pebble river rock.

One of the most important materials for a healthy raised bed garden is the soil. We used an all purpose planting soil and mushroom compost mixture that contained organic based nitrogen needed for the garden to blossom. The homeowner will only need to add compost on top before each planting season.

Step 4: Installing a Dedicated Irrigation System

One of the most important upgrades we made was installing a dedicated irrigation zone specifically for the garden.

We connected a new zone to the client’s existing sprinkler system so the raised beds could be watered independently from the rest of the yard.

An individual spigot was installed in each bed to give the homeowner maximum control of each bed’s watering needs. It also keeps irrigation lines hidden from sight.

Each bed was fitted with drip irrigation lines, which:

  • Deliver water directly to the plant roots
  • Reduce water waste
  • Prevent overwatering and disease
  • Make the garden significantly easier to maintain

A 1/4″ drip line with 6″ emitters was placed on top of the soil in each bed with 6″ spacing between each line. This ensured that every plant was within 6″ of a water source.

In South Carolina’s heat, this kind of system isn’t just a luxury – it’s what keeps a garden consistent and productive.

Step 5: Planting for Success (Not Just Variety)

We focused on warm season crops that thrive in South Carolina’s climate.

Vegetables Planted:
  • Tomatoes
  • Cucumbers
  • Squash
  • Zucchini
  • Red, Orange, and Yellow Bell Peppers
Herbs included:
  • Rosemary
  • Thyme
  • Sage
  • Oregano
  • Lavender
  • Basil Varieties (Sweet basil, Purple basil, and African Blue Basil)
Companion Flowers:
  • Nasturtiums
  • Zinnias
  • Cosmos

Flowering plants attract pollinators, help deter pests, and add beauty and softness to the space.

This combination creates a garden that’s not just productive but balanced and enjoyable to be in.

In South Carolina, we are fortunate to have a year-round growing season. While this garden was planted in April for the warm season, this homeowner will be able to plant a full fall and winter garden as summer comes to a close.

Step 6: Designing for Real Life

Beyond just planting, we made sure the garden would be easy to maintain.

That meant:

  • Intensive planting
  • Logical placement of crops based on growth habits
  • A layout that made watering and harvesting simple

Because a garden only works if the homeowner can keep up with it.

The Final Result

By the end of the install, the space was completely transformed.

What was once a sloped, unusable area became a structured, thriving kitchen garden that felt like it had always been part of the backyard.
